Isn't this similar to what The Freecycle NetworkTM are doing?

Yes. The principle is the same.

Additionally, we decided to deal with a lot of the difficulties that people have had with The Freecycle NetworkTM.

Why the name 'Fridge Mountain'?

As many of you probably remember, in 2002 and 2004, the UK was afflicted with a series of scandals involving the build up of discarded fridges at local council waste disposal sites. New EU regulations had made it illegal to dump old fridges on conventional landfill sites, due to the hazardous substances they contain. Manchester alone collected over 120,000 discarded fridges!

Although this problem has now been largely solved, with proper recycling processes in place for white goods, those pictures in the newspaper and on television of literal mountains of old fridges really highlighted for us the growing problem of waste and disposal in our society, not to mention the dwindling natural resources each of those fridges represented.

The real irony of the situation is that many of those fridges were probably in perfect working order; they weren't broken, but simply unwanted, but there's simply no market for this type of second hand product. Well, there wasn't, but there is now!

Is Fridge Mountain limited to the UK only?

Yes, unfortunately at the moment we're only operating in the UK. We do have plans to expand into other parts of the world soon.
